Sentiment Analysis Glossary

These terms describe how Sentimentary measures expressed sentiment, what people are saying in public conversations.
Apathetic
A sentiment label for samples where the score lands near zero but sentiment-bearing words are present. The language is resigned or fence-sitting — the person has disengaged from the topic without committing to a clear positive or negative position. Shown in blue on the sentiment core. Distinct from guarded: apathetic means the person has checked out; guarded means they’re still thinking.

Guarded
A sentiment label for samples with a weak lean in either direction, or balanced strong feelings that haven’t settled on one side. The person has an opinion but is undecided or measured — still weighing the options rather than disengaged. Shown in yellow on the sentiment core. Distinct from apathetic: guarded means the person is still weighing; apathetic means they’ve stopped weighing.
Negative
A sentiment label for samples where the expressed opinion is net negative. Shown in red on the sentiment core.
Positive
A sentiment label for samples where the expressed opinion is net positive. Shown in green on the sentiment core.
Sample
A single scored quote extracted from a public conversation. Each sample includes the quote text, a sentiment label, the source link, and the date it was retrieved.
Sentiment core
The circular visualization at the center of every search result. It shows the overall emotional distribution of the samples as colored segments and displays the strongest sentiment word (the core term) in the center. Green means positive, red means negative, yellow means guarded, blue means apathetic. Also called the core visualizer.
Sentiment engine
The proprietary system that reads each sample and assigns a polarity label and sentiment score. It analyzes language patterns — word choice, phrasing, and context — to determine whether a quote is positive, negative, guarded, or apathetic.
